NHS Hospital Garden - BNRU Patient & Visitor
Working in partnership with Jen of Jen Donnelly Garden Designs, the brief was to transform a neglected space into a welcoming, accessible sanctuary. The redesign of the BNRU patient and visitor garden at Amersham Hospital creates an inviting, multifunctional environment, turning an underutilized area into a tranquil space for patients, visitors, and staff.
The new design maximizes usable space by reshaping the existing vegetation bank and retaining walls, with wide pathways ensuring full accessibility. Visitors are drawn in by the vibrant lime-green foliage of Acer palmatum 'Sango-Kaku' in raised planters, leading them into a series of inviting "rooms."
Raised planters with a GRP Corten steel-effect complement the red brick walls, creating flexible spaces that are also ideal for wheelchair users, surrounding visitors with greenery. The garden features multipurpose tables and height-adjustable standing tables, encouraging spontaneous therapeutic activities.
A feature pergola with a louvered roof offers adaptable shade and weather protection, ensuring year-round usability. This thoughtfully designed space fosters tranquility and promotes well-being for patients, visitors, and staff.
Currently seeking funding, this garden aims to soon provide a meaningful benefit to patients and their families.
